Art Direction: Stephanie Knopp Deliverables: Digital Catalog
This dark, sexy, and sleek catalog I designed stemmed from a project meant to showcase a designer. I have always found fashion design to be thrilling, so this was a great opportunity to research and learn something more in depth about the fashion world. I’ve had a fashion crush on Gareth Pugh for a couple years, so I knew I could have some fun designing around his aesthetic.
Knowing Gareth Pugh’s love for the dramatic I thought that black white and a bold pop of red would be the condemning and edgy vibe I wanted to create. I chose a two column grid and switch from the two columns of text to breaking the grid every other article.
I chose to justify the body copy, I think that it gives it a cleaner look. Some trouble I ran into stemmed from that choice. I would sometimes get rivers and they would sometimes be really funky spacing. I had to manually adjust places where type got weird, but I’m glad that this happened because it taught how to fix such thing!
For the body copy I chose Hypatia, I find this font to be easily read. For my section openers I used a font that has a bit of a theatre vibe, I thought this tied in perfectly with Gareth Pugh’s theatrical designs.
